Automating Weight Logging

·2 mins

I’ve been trying to weigh myself every day, one so I get a good rolling average of my weight to account for fluctuations, and two so I’m more cognizant of my weight and can hopefully shed a few pounds.

I always forget, so I’ve been using the great app Due that reminds me every day at 730 and keeps nagging me every five minutes until I do it.

I log my weight in Happy Scale, a fun little indie app that logs my weight and keeps track of stats.

My workflow is to get nagged by Due, weigh myself, then open up Happy Scale and add my weight, then open due to make the task complete. It’s not a terribly complicated workflow but it’s kind of annoying to do every day. So, Shortcuts to the rescue!

Both Due and Happy Scale play well with Shortcuts, so I was able to create a little automation to ask for me weight, log it in happy scale, then mark my weight bagging reminder done in Due. I was also able to add the shortcut to control centre so it’s a nice little swipe down from wherever I am to trigger it.

Now, just to lose some weight! I’m averaging around 195 right now, which Happy Scale says is overweight, so I’m going to gradually try to get to 181. And by gradually I do mean… gradually. I’m okay if it takes a year because I’d rather make permanent changes to my diet that are sustainable rather than trying to starve myself or do some fad diet. I don’t eat out a lot, don’t drink sugary drinks, and don’t eat a lot of meat, so the only thing I can think of is to drink less beer. So I’m trying that! I’ll see how I do over the next bit.
